Working in conjunction with Main Contractor – Osborne Rail, Allglass Facades has designed, fabricated and installed the curtain walling at the new landmark £2m footbridge at Southampton Airport Parkway Station.

Since Southampton Airport Parkway Station opened in 1986, there has been a huge increase in passengers using the train to get them to and from the airport. Stagecoach South West Trains therefore decided to commission a new footbridge aimed at improving the flow of passengers around the station and giving direct access to the airport walkway.

The new landmark £2m footbridge is built over a two-track railway and includes two new lifts, making it easier for travellers with luggage and providing much needed access for disabled passengers to get from one side of the station to the other. The design of the staircases included inclined glazing topped with a cambered roof to create an elongated trapezoid tunnel that enhances the visual impact. In addition by using extensive glazing on other aspects of the footbridge and lift shafts, uninterrupted and clear lines of vision are achieved.

The innovative curtain wall glazing system was designed, manufactured and installed by glass processor and contractor, Allglass Facades, their technical team drawing up a specification utilising the Kawneer AA110 capped aluminium high performance curtain walling system.

By achieving the desired visual aesthetic Allglass has helped deliver on the architects design criteria by providing a high-quality glazed facade of floor-to-ceiling curtain walling with glass-to-glass detailing. Involvement from the initial design stages of this distinctive and demanding project was a challenge that Allglass was happy to meet, underlining the company’s commitment to supplying glazing solutions to the construction industry.
